Blueprint Overview
Blueprints are reusable document templates that save you time when you frequently send the same type of document for signature.
What is a blueprint?
A blueprint stores:
- A document file (PDF) with predefined page layout.
- Signing field positions and types (where signatures, dates, and text inputs go).
- Field properties (required/optional, labels, assigned signatory positions).
When you create a document from a blueprint, all of this is set up automatically — you just need to invite your signatories and send.
Types of blueprints
Docu Ninja supports three types of blueprints:
File-based blueprints
Upload your own PDF or document file and define signing fields on it. This is the most common type — perfect for contracts, agreements, NDAs, and any document you use repeatedly.
Design-based blueprints
Use the built-in template editor to design a document from scratch using a drag-and-drop visual editor. The editor supports text, images, tables, and other layout elements.
Document-based blueprints
Convert a completed document into a blueprint. This is useful when you have a signed document that worked well and you want to reuse its exact layout and field positions for future documents.
Benefits of using blueprints
- Consistency — every document created from a blueprint has the same field positions and layout.
- Speed — skip the setup process and go straight to inviting signatories.
- Accuracy — reduce the risk of placing fields in the wrong position or forgetting required fields.
- Team efficiency — share blueprints across your team so everyone uses the same templates.
Blueprint permissions
Blueprints follow the same permissions model as other entities. You can control who can view, edit, and create blueprints.
